The Engineer I - Packaging reviews and improves existing packaging designs across our product portfolio, integrating new packaging materials that meet Acme’s food specifications, while simultaneously reducing packaging material and/or labor costs, all while considering environmental externalities. This role will collaborate with internal teams and packaging suppliers to achieve functional and sustainable packaging, aiming to enhance product performance across a diverse product portfolio. The Engineer designs, tests, and implements packaging designs that are integral to Acme’s Product Development and Manufacturing processes.

What You Will Do At Acme:

  • Specify and recommend tools and test methods to develop and validate packaging designs for our manufacturing facilities and consumers.
  • Perform root cause analysis on Packaging related quality issues and report to key stakeholders within Acme.
  • Build work instructions using standardized work instruction (CSW or SOP) for Packaging, including primary packaging, tertiary packaging, and palletization.
  • Enhance Acme Packaging specifications, taking a hands-on approach with Manufacturing and suppliers to weigh, record, and solve gaps in the existing data.
  • Improve existing packaging designs, materials, and processes. Provide creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions.
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, environmental and safety requirements, and types of materials required for packaging.
  • Identify, recommend and research new and existing packaging options to align with product development projects and potential claims.
  • Oversee and manage complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development, and performance testing.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Product Development teams to design innovative, functional packaging for our products.

 

About You

Your Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, packaging science, packaging engineering, or related field required.
  • 2+ years of experience in food & beverage, industrial or consumer packaging industry.
  • Previous manufacturing and/or production experience; food production preferred.
  • Knowledge of packaging supply base landscape.

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of packaging design validation (ISO, ASTM, etc.), drafting, and specification standards.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. 
  • Work environment – Office and production floor.
  • The ability to work in cold (32-45°F) and wet environment.
  • Prolonged periods of standing.
  • Exposure to low level of noise on production floor.
  • Exposure to uneven ground and floor angles.
  • Stretching, bending, pulling, etc.
  • Up to 50% Travel
  • Must be able to lift to 50 pounds at times.

Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Observe and follow all safety rules.
  • Wear required PPE.
  • Follow mandated OSHA regulations.
  • Report all incidents including near misses immediately.

Compensation Range:  $75,000 - $86,000 annually. 

*This compensation range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
