Position Summary:

The primary role of an RA is to lead and facilitate a community that supports the academic and personal development of each individual in the residence halls/apartments. RAs accomplish this through developing positive personal relationships with each resident, collaborating with various campus offices, empowering residents to effectively interact with their fellow students, and upholding Albright community standards.

  • RAs in First Year Communities: These RAs are tasked with creating a strong community amongst first year residents. They assist residents through their transition into college and all the challenges that may bring including but not limited to personal, academic and social aspects. The First Year Community will be housed in Crowell, Krause, Smith and Walton Halls.
  • RAs in Upperclassmen Traditional Communities: These RAs are challenged with the task of building community amongst residents who in many ways have already established communities at Albright. RAs must think outside of the box when it comes to getting their residents together. The UCT Community will be housed in Mohn, North, Rockland & the New Residence Hall.

 

Essential Job Functions:

Behavioral Expectations

As employees of The Office of Residential Life, RAs are expected to adhere to the following standards of conduct throughout the course of their duties as well as their daily lives.

 

  1. Read, understand, and carry out the duties and responsibilities described in the resident assistant position description and The RA Manual.
  2. Understand, promote, uphold, enforce, and personally abide by all College policies, local, state, and federal laws.
  3. Role model behavior appropriate for an Albright College student and representative of The Office of Residential Life.
  4. Follow established procedures and actively support staff decisions and staff members.
  5. Follow directions of The Office of Residential Life professional staff, lead resident assistants (LRAs), and other college officials.
  6. Prioritize the RA position as the most important time commitment outside of academics. Other employment and extra-curricular activities are limited to 10 hours per week unless prior written permission is granted by the AC/AD of that area. The activities include, but are not limited to, internships, student teaching, athletics, and memberships/leadership positions in student organizations.
  7. Attend all meetings, programs, and events as required by the job description and by supervisors.
  8. Keep supervisors informed about what is happening in the assigned residential area.
  9. Follow established channels of communication and supervision to voice concerns.
  10. Refrain from using any substance that would interfere with the ability to perform job responsibilities while on-duty. When not on-duty, refrain from addressing situations while impaired.
  11. Be respectful to residents, peers, professional staff, and other community members at all times.

 

Community Development & Programming Responsibilities

    1. Establish rapport with each resident within your community.
    2. Be available and accessible to residents within the community throughout the week.
    3. Resolve low-level roommate conflicts with use of roommate agreements and in consultation with supervisors.
    4. Hold regular community meetings to address community issues and inform students of important College information.
    5. Educate residents on College policies outlined in the Community Living Guide and in the Compass.
    6. Confront and document any potential violations of College policies.
    7. Develop and implement programming as required in accordance with The RA Programming Model.
    8. Maintain open communication between students, staff, faculty and the College by keeping students aware of programs, activities and resources available to them.
    9. Maintain the upkeep of your community bulletin board(s), post all informational flyers and remove old flyers within an appropriate time frame.

 

Administrative Responsibilities

    1. Assist in all hall openings and closings, new student check in and orientation, and returning student check-in.
    2. Complete Room Condition Reports (RCRs), photos, and Roommate Agreements in a detailed, thorough and timely manner.
    3. Complete room change, check-out, and closing procedures as directed.
    4. Assist with lock-outs according to established guidelines.
    5. Report and follow up on necessary facilities and custodial problems immediately as specified by the professional staff.
    6. Regularly check in with the Office of Residential Life, your residential life mailbox (minimum of three times per week), and other communications.
    7. Attend all staff meetings and trainings defined by the professional staff members.
    8. Complete and submit Incident Reports (IRs) immediately following incident.
    9. Assist in the new RA selection and housing selection processes each year.
    10. Submit all paperwork required by the professional staff on time.
    11. Follow established procedures for requesting time away from campus.

 

On Call Responsibilities

    1. Participate in on call rotation established by professional staff and lead RAs.
    2. Serve on call from 8pm – 8am for assigned residence hall/apartments.
    3. While on call, remain in residence hall and be available to answer and respond to calls.
    4. Remain awake and available on week nights between 8pm – 12am and 8pm – 2am on weekend nights by conducting building rounds and staffing the RA Office in accordance with policy outlined in The RA Manual.
    5. Wear Residential Life RA shirt during hours of conducting rounds.
    6. On building rounds inspect for facilities concerns and damages and be alert to community concerns such as quiet hour violations, conflicts, and policy violations.
    7. Submit facilities requests for facilities concerns and damages.
    8. Complete duty log and send to supervisors prior to 8am.
    9. Report all behavioral infractions to the professional staff and file Incident Reports and Violation Forms as required, submitted in a timely manner.

 

Other Related Duties as Assigned

There are many times when other duties will arise and the Residential Life Staff will be expected to participate in, recruit for, help out, moderate, and/or be available. If a conflict arises, the professional staff supervisor of the area must have prior notification in writing.

 

Mandatory Time Commitments

Meetings

    1. Attend weekly staff meeting with area staff
    2. Attend bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with LRA
    3. Attend bi-weekly/monthly one-on-one meetings with professional staff supervisor
    4. Attend All Staff Meetings/In-services: Dates to be determined.


Openings, Closings, and Training

    1. Spring Orientation/Training: May
    2. Fall Training and Opening: August
    3. Thanksgiving Break: November
    4. Winter Break: December
    5. Interim: January
    6. Spring Training and Opening: January
    7. Spring Break: March
    8. Spring Closing: May

 

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this job. 

 

The individual is routinely exposed to indoor conditions, minimum outdoor weather and temperature extremes, and moderate noise level.

 

Qualifications/Prerequisites:

 

  1. SKILLS - Person hired in this position must:

  3. Have some ability to develop programs for residents

 

  1. EMPLOYMENT EXPERIENCE
    1. Past experience as camp counselor or community work is a plus, but not required to be hired.

 

  1. EDUCATION
  1. Must be a current Albright student.
  2. Must have a 2.5 or above cumulative GPA.
  3. Must be in good academic and judicial standing with the College.
