Position Summary:

This is a student position doing assisting in the teaching laboratories in the department of chemistry and biochemistry. A student in this position will assist the lab professor by helping students, collecting materials, and organizing lab supplies.

 

Essential Job Functions:

The student will work during a scheduled laboratory. The laboratory assistant in this position must comply with all safety mandates in the department, including wearing pants, a laboratory coat, and safety glasses at all times. The student will assist the instructor in implementing the laboratory, and assist students in the laboratory in performing the laboratory. Additional tasks that the laboratory assistant will accomplish consist of some or all of the following:

 

  1. Answer student questions and monitor student progress during the laboratory period.
  2. Obtain chemicals from storage for use, and return them after use.
  3. Distribute chemicals and laboratory materials to the appropriate locations.
  4. Prepare solutions using proper technique.
  5. Maintain and organize equipment and clean laboratories and preparation spaces.
  6. Read and provide feedback on laboratory instructions.
  7. Test experiments to ensure they work.
  8. Record and analyze data related to course experiments.
  9. Cleaning laboratory benches and cabinets.
  10. Dispose of waste using following the policies and procedures of the college.
  11. Perform other tasks related to the functioning of the teaching laboratories in the department of chemistry and biochemistry as assigned.

 

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this job. 

The individual is routinely exposed to indoor conditions, minimum outdoor weather and temperature extremes, and moderate noise level.

 

Qualifications/Prerequisites:

 

  1. SKILLS
    1. The worker will have had experience with safe laboratory practice and with analytical balances and glassware.

 

  1. EMPLOYMENT EXPERIENCE
    1.  No previous employment experience is required.

 

  1. EDUCATION
  1. The worker will have completed at least one course in chemistry and will have completed the laboratory from the course for which the worker is applying for (at Albright or the equivalent at another institution).
