OPERATIONS CREW LEADER

 

Department: War Memorial Coliseum                                            FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Classification/Level: LTC IV                                                          Date:  8/2017

Under the direction of the Assistant Operations Manager, the Operations Crew Leader oversees and assists with change-over, set-up requirements and providing services for events at the War Memorial Coliseum. This position is covered as defined by The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  • Responsible for ensuring the arena, expo center and conference center are ready for sporting events, concerts, meetings, banquets or any other usage variations by setting appropriate chairs, tables, equipment and preparing the floor for events.
  • Prepares for arena, expo center or conference center events including setting up telescopic seating, carpet, tables and chairs and staging.
  • Completes meeting room set-ups as shown on official event diagrams and adjusts as revisions are made.
  • Responsible for assisting in training and monitoring work crews in safe and proper handling of equipment, machinery, chemicals and ensuring a safe environment for clients, guests and employees at all times.
  • Assists work crew with ice making and removal. Places and removes the basketball court.
  • Communicates with clients, vendors and guests to answer questions and resolves issues before, during and after events. Recommends solutions and follows the final solution to completion.
  • Operates equipment including Zamboni, forklift, Bobcat, snow plows, mowers, trimmers, hand tools and related attachments in the general repair, maintenance, and safety of the War Memorial Coliseum.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • High School Diploma or GED and three years’ experience in expo and event center operations, trade shows, stage building or related experience
  • Ability to obtain a forklift certification within 30 days of employment
  • Valid Driver’s License to operate county owned vehicles
  • Strong verbal communications skills to instruct crews, expedite work flow, and solve routine issues
  • Ability to use a variety of power and manual tools to remove dasher boards, assemble basketball flooring and goals, and perform onsite asset repair
  • Ability to manage and train crews in safe and efficient operation of job related equipment
  • Understanding of local, state, and federal safety codes and regulations to ensure all rules and regulations are followed
  • Ability to read set up drawings from the Event Coordinators and set rooms accordingly
  • Working knowledge of Coliseum operations, specialized techniques, and accepted practice of event change-over and set-up
  • Ability to be flexible and work varying shifts to accommodate events schedules, including nights, holidays and weekends, as needed
  • Basic computer skills with the ability to use Microsoft Office and other job related software
  • Ability to lift up to seventy-five pounds

 

 

DIFFICULTY OF WORK:

 

The Operations Crew Leader performs work that consists of moderately complex and varied standardized tasks when ensuring the arena, expo center and conference center are ready for sporting events, concerts, meetings, banquets or any other usage variations by setting appropriate chairs, tables, equipment and preparing floor for events. The Operations Crew Leader has the ability to understand at an elementary level to read official event diagrams for event set-up.

 

RESPONSIBILITY:

 

The Operations Crew Leader performs work that involves a moderate degree of care and skill when assisting in training and monitoring work crews in safe and proper handling of equipment, machinery, chemicals and ensuring a safe environment for clients, guests and employees at all times. Work is performed under moderate supervision and instructions are relatively complete when preparing for expo center or conference center events.

 

PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

 

The Operations Crew Leader maintains frequent contact with other county employees, contract employees and the public when servicing, setting up and/or tearing down events at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

The Operations Crew Leader works in an arena, expo center, and conference center environment with frequent standing, walking, lifting up to sixty pounds, bending, pushing/pulling loads, reaching over head, kneeling, crawling, climbing ladders, mental/visual effort, attention to detail, detailed inspection, heights and exposure to dangerous equipment. Some sitting, typing, monitoring equipment and exposure to temperature extremes, dangerous chemicals, noise, and noxious odors/fumes are to be expected. 

 

SUPERVISION:

Supervises crews ranging in size from one person to eight people.

 

LICENSING:

Ability to obtain a forklift certification within 30 days employment

Valid Driver’s License to operate county owned vehicles

 

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:

Assistant Operations Manager

 

HOURS:

40 hours/week; shifts vary based on events; may include nights, weekends, and holidays as needed
