POSITION SUMMARY:  To develop and maintain the University’s outdoor athletic facilities such that they are ‘always’ ready to play on (weather-permitting).  Perform landscaping duties on grounds surrounding the athletic fields.  Lead a team of full time staff and student workers. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Athletic Facilities
    1. Design, develop, and maintain the University’s outdoor athletic facilities.
    1. Layout and perform all required marking/striping of fields.
    2. Maintain fields as needed during events – smoothing, re-striping, etc.
  1. Turf maintenance:
    1. Analyze soil, select seeds and execute proper planting methods.
    2. Select and apply fertilizers with appropriate licenses and certifications.
    3. Mow variety of fields/surfaces.
    4. Identifies and controls weeds and insects
  1. Preventive maintenance on irrigation systems.
    1. Design and install an in-ground irrigation system.
    2. Install, maintain, and replace sprinkler heads, valves, and controllers.
    3. Maintain drawings (with University CAD technician) of all irrigation lines.
  1. Equipment
    1. Investigate, identify and purchase appropriate hand-operated and motorized equipment.
    2. Investigate, identify and purchase appropriate field marking equipment, track supplies. 
  1. Communication
    1. Hire, train and supervise a team of staff and student workers.
    2. Work collaboratively with personnel in the Athletics Division.
    3. Coordinate all game set-ups – and communicate when conditions render a field unusable. 
  2. Budget – maintain the outdoor athletic facility budget with supervisor’s assistance.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum of five (5) years of experience in an athletics position such as coaching, athletic administration preferred. 
  2. Experience designing, installing, and maintaining athletic facilities preferred.
  3. Knowledge of turf management and possession of all necessary certifications and training for fertilizing preferred.
  4. Must possess valid Ohio driver license.

REQUIRED MENTAL/PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

  1. Work requires the application of a variety of procedures, policies, and/or precedents. Applications may be direct or gained from interpretation of technical data. Analytic ability is needed to gather and interpret data and adapt standard methods to fit variations in existing conditions.
  2. Heavy work; considerable physical exertion required, occasional lifting or carrying of objects (up to 100 pounds) and regular lifting or carrying of objects up to 50 pounds.
  3. Frequent exposure to extreme levels of temperature, air pollution, noise, chemical substances or hazardous conditions.
  4. Work deals with machines such as power tools (drills, saws), sanders, presses or tools where the seeing job is within arms reach. This would also include the ability to operate motor vehicles involved in transportation to and from the various job sites. Also works with analyzing data, visual inspection, and clerical record keeping.
  5. Reaching, pushing, pulling, kneeling, stooping, balancing, talking, hearing, grasping, fingering, climbing.
  6. Ability to adjust to changing work schedule based on current weather conditions.
