Welder Assistant
Expected Work Schedule: Tuesday- Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Summary:
This position will assist with welding activities throughout the Zoo as well as other trades as necessary.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assist with repair and fabrication of structures, equipment and displays
• Assist in assembling and securing equipment prior to welding, using power tools and measuring devices to weld stainless steel or mild steel
• Assist with loading and unloading of welding equipment, setting up and maintaining the welding equipment, and assist the welder in the welding process
• Perform tasks assigned by welders, including cutting, bending, and assembling parts
• Identify and report any welding, cutting, or bending errors
• Assist with routine facility inspections, troubleshooting, building, maintenance and repair of various types of structures such as but not limited to fences, handrails, fixtures, buildings, exhibits, etc.
• Complete work in a safe manner in accordance with Zoo safety standards
• Perform quality work in a timely manner and maintain work area in a neat, orderly, and safe manner
• Utilize the CMMS work order system for work scheduling, preventative maintenance programs and record keeping
• Adhere to all departmental standard operating and safety procedures and guidelines
• Ensure tools and equipment are properly cleaned, stored, and maintained
• Assist where needed in inter-departmental projects and functions
• Perform other related duties and responsibilities (as appropriate to skill level and experience) as assigned
• Have regular and punctual attendance
• Work modified schedule as needed and determined by management
Qualifications:

• Ability to function as a member of a team in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to work flexible schedule including weekends and occasional evenings
• Knowledge of welding techniques and associated tools and equipment
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and other technical documents
• Valid driver license with acceptable motor vehicle record to maintain zoo standards of insurability
Education and/or Experience:
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred
• One year of directly related experience in facility maintenance and/or construction
• One year welding experience
• Experience in the use of common hand and power tools used in the maintenance and construction crafts
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
