PRIMARY FUNCTION:


Develop and conduct programs to train Gregory Poole Employee’s or GPEC customers in safety, maintenance, installation, or repair of machinery and equipment by performing the following duties.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 

  1. Perform stand-up instruction.  Using knowledge of adult learning, presents prepared training programs to individuals or groups of employees.
  2. Confer with management and staff to determine training objectives.  Assist in the preparation of the annual technical training plan with input from Service Managers, Branch Managers, MCFA and Caterpillar.
  3. Writes training material.  Draws upon knowledge of the job, work processes, the organization, and the individual (s) to be trained; develops and writes training programs designed to transfer skills and knowledge to the trainee. Using knowledge of adult learning, select instructional medium most appropriate for the transfer of skill and knowledge.  Prepare job and training aids in addition to instructional programs.
  4. Prepare quarterly training schedule of classes based on classroom and equipment availability.  Route training schedule to all service department's one-month prior to class start-up.
  5. Lectures’ class on safety, EPA requirements, removal and installation procedures, general maintenance procedures, PM’s, troubleshooting techniques, failure analysis, system maintenance and repair of equipment, and many other topics following outline, handouts, and texts.
  6. Demonstrate procedures being taught, such as repair, removal and installation, failure analysis, etc.
  7. Observe trainees in laboratory and answers' trainees' questions.
  8. Lead discussion groups on a variety of subjects, including troubleshooting and problem-solving techniques.  Manage conflict within a group, assures total and balanced participation.  May prepare meeting agendas and attend to other group meeting needs.
  9. Administer written and practical exams and writes performance reports to evaluate trainee’s’ performance.  Analyze test data and reports the effectiveness of the training.
  10. Participate in meetings, seminars, and training sessions to obtain information useful to training faculty and integrates information into training program.
  11. Repairs electrical, electronic, and mechanical components needed for instruction.
  12. Helps individuals determine their strengths and areas requiring improvement.  Works with individuals one-on-one to assess skills, knowledge, and abilities. Help's market the total training package to “internal” and “external” customer.
  13. Uses audiovisual equipment to produce training aids or training programs.
  14. Identify areas in which training is needed to achieve targeted levels of performance.  Measures current levels of performance against ideal desired levels of performance.
  15. Makes sure that people, equipment, and material are in place when needed. 
  16. Develop the content of training curricula.  Analyze the needs of GPEC and the targeted training audience and designs training curriculum to meet those needs.  To include, selecting methods to facilitate adult learning and retention.
  17. Works with management to develop long-term plans for training within GPEC. Analyze demographics, availability of human resources and long-term business needs to help plan training to meet long-term business objectives.
  18. Helps individuals apply training to the job.  Observe work as it is performed. Coaches' employees in the application of new skills.
  19. Provide training in the Safety Mentor program for new Technicians
  20. Update and Maintain materials needed for Caterpillar Tech Career Development Program Assessment (TCDP-A)

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Should have an associate degree with at least two years of instructional development and training.  Extensive mechanical background and human relations skills may substitute for the associate degree. Formal Caterpillar factory training (or other major manufactory) is an advantage. Command of the job varies with the individual and his/her background.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret service manuals, parts manuals, common technical journals, and technical procedures.  Ability to write technical reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, technicians, and GPEC external customers.  Ability to orally respond to common inquiries or complaints from internal or external customers.  To include the ability to effectively present information to top management

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instruction furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

 

Valid state driver license, Caterpillar Certified Instructor Accreditation Program (CIAP)

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES

Ability to use a personal computer at a intermediate level, primarily with MS Word, Excel, and Power Point to learn related associated training software to perform research and communication. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The job duties must be performed both in an office environment and in the field visiting and working at customer job sites.  For these reasons, the incumbent must be able to drive approximately 5,000 to 8,000 miles per year. The employee must be able to pass a non-regulated DOT physical to operate a truck and trailer combination up to 26,000 lbs and have the physical capabilities to climb stairs and large pieces of mobile heavy equipment.  The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to risk of electrical shock.  The employee frequently works in precarious places and in outside weather conditions and is exposed to wet/humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme cold or heat. The noise level in the work environment may also be very loud.  This function requires normal eyesight to read and interpret technical information, as well as hearing and speaking ability to communicate with personnel with GPEC, our suppliers and those employed by our customers.
