Estimating Engineer Intern (Summer 2025)

In preconstruction, we are preparing you to see the big picture that sets up a project for success through preplanning and collaboration. This preplanning and collaboration will occur with a variety of stakeholders that include the Project Owner, Design Teams, Field Operations Team, Scheduling, and Preconstruction. You will leave this experience feeling well rounded in your understanding of what all goes into a project, coordination of trades, and the cost to build these project within a variety of Markets. You will have touched as many as 10+ different projects during your time as an Intern here at Haydon. That in itself is a great resume builder.
Preconstruction Estimating Engineers are responsible for assisting with the development of detailed construction cost estimates to successfully bid and win projects. Engineers will also work with project management staff to follow-up on bids and to relay information from Estimating to Operations.
Essential Job Functions
- Assist in estimate preparation with correct On Screen Take off (OST) and Scope defined documentation.
- Provide high quality estimating data in a timely and professional manner.
- Self-check work
- Peer review work
- Gain an understanding of our estimating fundamentals.
- Familiarity with estimating terminology and basic concepts.
- Coordinate with Operations to understand schedule and General Conditions to be applied to the each project
- Understanding of how to read and interpret drawings and specifications.
- Understand how to coordinate scopes of work between an array of trade contractors
- Develop familiarity with estimate requirements.
- Perform whole building quantity survey and analysis on projects.
- Coordination with Design team throughout the different phases of estimating to ensure undefined scope is clarified
- Work closely with Preconstruction Manager and Estimating staff to analyze phasing, sequencing, and work limitations.
- Produce reports for departmental use in generating whole building estimates
- Apply computer skills in the execution of work.
- Visit site and record existing conditions
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Junior to seniors currently enrolled at a four-year institution.
- Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Construction Management, Engineering or related degree.
- Proactive, open-minded, eager to learn and willing to work hard as part of a team.
- Working knowledge of construction techniques and building materials is a plus
- Must work effectively with estimating staff and other project team members.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Excel is required; use of OST is a plus
- Ability to work under pressure to meet internal and client project deadlines without compromising quality
