The Alternatives to Incarceration program is part of the Los Angeles County-wide pilot initiative to re-imagine incarceration, the program aims to divert individuals detained for misdemeanors and non-serious/non-violent felonies to community support services in lieu of the filing of criminal charges. We are developing an alternative system that attempts to address some of the conditions that lead to incarceration such as homelessness, mental health, addiction, lack of employment, and opportunities. We hope to build a sustainable network of providers in collaboration with law enforcement and district attorneys to expand the capacity of the community to support those in need.

 

Peer Navigator/Driver of Alternatives to Incarceration

Under the direction of the Manager, the Peer Navigator/Driver of Alternatives to Incarceration will provide transportation needs of ATI by ensuring that participants are safely transported to housing, behavioral health treatment facilities, or other supportive services. Provide connections to community-based services to offer a foundation of support to prevent incarceration all while providing advocacy, guidance, motivation and knowledge. The right person for this position is innovative and will draw on trauma informed practices, Restorative Justice, harm reduction, building resilience, and community safety planning to prevent recidivism.

 

"This position will be co-located at the HR360 2307 West 6th Street, Men’s Program in downtown Los Angeles with the following shifts available:

 

  1. Sundays 5pm - 1:30am and Monday - Friday 3pm - 11:30pm and

 

  1. Tuesdays - Thursdays 11pm - 7:30am and Friday - Saturday 9pm - 5:30am

 

The position will act as monitor at the 6th Street Program when activity at the HR360 Alternatives to Incarceration office at the Metro Police Station is low. Upon request from ATI Manager or designee, the Peer Navigator will transport clients from the Metro Police Station to community-based services.” 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Transports individuals in a safe and professional manner to designated provider destinations and approved appointments in the community (i.e. intake appointment).
  • Provide transportation services co-located at the police station or be on-call within 90 minutes.
  • Coordinate all participants’ appointments with the System Navigator and Case Manager.
  • Safely transports participants in company provided vehicle following all applicable federal and state driving laws.
  • Work in conjunction with treatment team by assisting with following through on linkage(s).
  • Enters transportation activities in company database, files related paperwork, maintains and prepares vehicle usage reports and logs.
  • Empathetic support and feedback that is trauma informed and culturally competent.
  • Ensure that all documentation is completed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Responsible for ensuring routine vehicle maintenance including inspections including keeping the interior and exterior are clean and free from damage. Refuel the vehicle.
  • Report as soon as possible any problems or concerns regarding a specific participant or transportation request.
  • Complete incident reports of accidents, injury, or near misses and report urgent incidents to program manager.
  • Maintain confidentiality in compliance with agency, HIPAA and 42CFR standards.
  • Comply with all agency’s policies, procedures, and codes of ethics.
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures established by HealthRIGHT 360's Health & Safety program, including but not limited to; participating in emergency preparedness drills, reporting any potential safety hazards to the appropriate party, and following proper protocols for response to emergency situations.
  • And, other duties as assigned.

Education and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Education and Experience Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED with minimum of two (2) years’ experience professional driving experience

Background Clearance: 

  • Must pass LAPD background clearance.

Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Ability to provide high level customer service to a client population struggling with issues of substance abuse, mental health, criminal background, and other potential barriers to economic self-sufficiency.
  • Strong initiative and enthusiasm and willingness to pitch in whenever needed
  • Strong organizational, management, leadership, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with law enforcement, district attorneys, staff, justice involved individuals, and community members/organizations.
