Job Overview  

This is a union position.

The primary responsibility of the Parenting Counselor is to teach parenting techniques after monitoring interactions between mother and child. The individual will provide one to one counseling and facilitate parenting groups. This person will  be responsible for collaborating with CPS, Homeless Prenatal and Family Treatment Court and submitting weekly progress reports. These collaborations  will account for at least 60% of the parenting counselor’s time.

The ideal candidate would have Early Childhood Development education, substance use disorder knowledge with related registration, and familiarity with Child Protection Services.

The team of providers at Women's HOPE includes parenting counselors, therapists, and SUD Counselors who provide wrap around services to support and empower our participants as they reach toward their goals. This residential program offers specialized care to the underserved female population of San Francisco and their families/children, with a special focus on pregnant and parenting women with co-occurring substance use and psychiatric disorders. The program is gender responsive  and trauma informed, addressing substance use, trauma, mental illness, health and wellness, family reunification, parenting education, employability, homelessness, and sober living skills.

Key Responsibilities:

Caseload Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for caseload of children and their mothers.
  • Holds individual counseling sessions.
  • Assists women in implementing parenting strategies.
  • Documents progress and challenges that may occur.

Treatment Setting Responsibilities: 

  • Evaluates client’s parenting needs as well as child needs and develops treatment plan.
  • Demonstrates and teaches parenting techniques to resident parents.
  • Teaches effective parenting through consistent limit setting and behavior modification techniques.
  • Participates in recreational activities with clients.
  • Facilitates children’s meetings and specialized groups.
  • Assist mothers in taking children to appointments and community activities. 
  • Refers children for counseling. 
  • Manages behavior problems as they occur. 

Education and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Registration or Certification with Drug and Alcohol  Certification recognized by ADP.
  • 1 year or more experience working in a childcare environment or bachelor's degree in early childhood development.
  • First Aid Certified within 30 days of employment.
  • CPR Certified within 30 days of employment.
  • A valid California driver’s license.
  • High School diploma or equivalent .

Desired:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Development, Psychology, Counseling , or relevant field, or 5 years related experience.
  • Experience working in a residential setting.
