HealthRIGHT 360’s residential substance use disorder (SUD) program is a program contracted with the Department of Public Health’s (DPH) Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC) program for residential drug Medi-Cal (DMC) services for up to 99 adult men and women:  33 that are for men who are judicially involved, 33 for men, and 33 for women.  The residential DMC program works closely with the other BHC programs to provide a continuum of services for low income/Medi-Cal population.  The program is located on the campus of Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital in the Willowbrook area of South Los Angeles and will serve all LA County residents.   

The Lead Client Safety Navigator is responsible for ensuring and maintaining a safe environment for all clients, staff, and visitors, utilizes verbal de-escalation strategies to address crisis situations and client behavioral issues, and is available 24/7 on-site at the program. The Lead Client Safety Navigators ensure that the building space is safe and secure. The Lead Client Safety Navigator will monitor entrances and exits, check clients in when returning from appointments, check visitors in, complete house runs and room checks, and help maintain the overall safety of the program. The Client Safety Navigator will work with program leadership, sheriff’s/local law enforcement, and health and safety teams to respond to emergency and crisis situations at the program, including client drug use, overdose, programmatic interruptions, and other situations. 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides oversight of all Pods to ensure safety is maintained. Provide support and feedback to all navigators on shifts as needed.  
  • Maintains a high degree of self-awareness and the ability to stay calm under pressure.  
  • Demonstrates strong crisis intervention and client stabilization skills and is skilled at motivational interviewing.  
  • Utilizes trauma-informed care while applying crisis intervention, motivational interviewing, and supervision of the clients.  
  • Completes facility rounds on a regular basis to maintain supervision of the clients and facility.  
  • Seeks clinical consultation when encountering new and/or high-risk clinical circumstances. 
  • Provides facility coverage by supervising the clients during chores, visiting hours, mealtimes, medication line, detox, donations, groups, and free time.   
  • Monitors visiting hours and addresses safety concerns. 
  • Works collaboratively with other members of the treatment team and communicates any behavioral concerns to the client’s Case Manager, Clinical Therapist, Medical, and Psychiatrist. 
  • Maintain client sign-in/out logs, and visitor sign-in/out logs. File incident reports as needed.

Education and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

Education, Certification, and Experience Required:  

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 3 years of ‘lived experience’ with the community behavioral health system and/or criminal justice system.
  • Background Clearance.
  • Must not be on active parole or probation.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain satisfactory background checks.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain live scan clearance.
  • Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, including booster shots. Medical or religious exemptions are not available. 

Knowledge Required: 

  • Trained in crisis de-escalation tactics. 
  • Trained in recognizing signs of overdose and the use of overdose reversal medication.
  • Knowledge of Los Angeles community behavioral health and public health systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to interface well with diverse, disadvantaged populations with multiple barriers to educational and vocational success, including low literacy, learning disabilities, physical disabilities, history of incarceration, and impaired cognitive functioning. 
  • Understanding of social determinants of health and the importance of whole-person care. 

Desired: 

  • Familiarity with various supportive counseling strategies and wellness and recovery principles in working with clients with mental health, substance abuse, or co-occurring conditions. 
  • Proven ability to build strong relationships with colleagues, community organizations, and the broader community. 

Skills and Abilities Required: 

  • Ability to work with local law enforcement and leadership on site. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, planning and time management skills. 
  • High degree of creative energy and the ability to adapt easily to change. 
  • Willingness to work with clients in the community. 
  • Ability to respond quickly and use good judgment in unusual and emergency situations. 
  • Attention to detail. 

Desired: 

  • Team orientation and ability to independently assume responsibility. 
  • Energetic and enthusiastic. 
  • Experience counseling or teaching adults and/or facilitating workshops.
