What You'll Do

As a Safety Tour Supervisor, you'll help maintain a safe and secure environment at one of our transitional housing shelters that is located on Wards Island and provides temporary housing for men living with diagnosed mental illnesses. You'll oversee a team of Safety Team Leaders and Safety Officers who are usually the first contact with our residents when they enter one of our facilities. In addition to ensuring residents' safety, our Safety Team helps our residents feel welcome and set the tone for their stay. It is critical that our Safety Team is alert, vigilant, and courteous to our residents. Responsibilities include patrolling facility grounds, ensuring residents and guests are properly signed in, escorting visitors to proper destinations, conducting unit inspections, maintaining accurate documentation and preparing incident reports when necessary.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supervising Safety Team Leaders and Safety Officers: setting safety staff priorities, communicating clear expectations, and providing ongoing feedback and guidance. 

  • Planning and facilitating team meetings and holding regular individual supervision sessions with each team member.

  • Assisting Assistant Safety Director, Safety Director, and others in the development and presentation of training activities for Safety staff.

  • Documenting individual staff issues as necessary.

  • Preparing and submitting on time all necessary administrative reports including incident reports, electronic patrol reports, time and attendance, etc. 

You’re a great fit for this role if you have:

  • New York State Security Guard License, FDNY F-02, and FDNY F-80 (must be obtained within 60 days of hire date).

  • High School Diploma or equivalent OR equivalent experience and skills.
  • Minimum of two years security experience in a shelter environment and prior supervisory experience.

  • Capacity to work with people experiencing homelessness and mental illness or other disadvantaged people.

  • Strong customer service orientation and ability to skillfully manage interpersonal relationships.

  • Strong time management and organizational skills.

  • Computer literacy with Microsoft applications.

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

  • Ability to provide night and weekend coverage as needed.
