Editorial Opinion Writer (Temporary)

EDITORIAL WRITER (TEMPORARY)

The Buffalo News, an award-winning news organization in New York’s second-largest city, is seeking a thoughtful editorial writer for our online and print opinion sections. 

This writer will join a team that steers debate and community conversation on current events and local and state policy issues.

The ideal candidate will have a breadth of knowledge about key issues in the Buffalo Niagara region and New York State and can distill complex issues into saliant, fact-based opinion.  Topics of high interest to our readers include public safety, government accountability, education, housing and equity.

From elected officials in Albany to grassroots groups, our opinion pages serve as a marketplace of ideas. We are committed to elevating voices from across the community. Thoughts on local and national issues are reflected through syndicated and local columnists, letters to the editor and opinion cartoons. 

Job duties include:

• Editorial writing
• Selecting and editing syndicated columns and letters to the editor
• Serving as a community contact for editorial board meetings with lawmakers, political candidates, business leaders, grassroots organizations and more
• Production of short videos

Requirements:

• Three years of experience working in a professional newsroom with experience writing opinion and/or editorials
• Strong opinion writing skills
• Solid reporting and editing ability
• Robust knowledge of current events, politics and issues affecting Buffalo and Erie County
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in journalism or related field
• Adept at SEO, headline writing and utilizing analytics to read a digital audience
