The Automation Engineer is responsible for integrated, automated or semi-automated assembly equipment in medical device manufacturing. This includes the scoping and development, validation support, and sustaining engineering activities on automation/semi-automation equipment on site. The automation engineer will help support the Manufacturing Engineer team to identify and lead capital automation improvement projects, support process qualifications for automation solutions, and process optimization/efficiency/production improvements. Position will also be partner to maintenance and will help lead troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing equipment.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Identifying, leading, and implementing semi and automated solutions on the site to improve operator safety, product quality and operational efficiency. This will include engagement in new and optimized solutions for new product introduction and development, and review of current equipment for integrated solutions.
  • Collaborate closely with other engineering functions and maintenance to resolve automation issues, failures, and/or repairs. This includes the diagnosis of all aspects of semi/automated equipment from mechanical systems, electrical systems, and control systems. Position will lead site effort to ensure automated equipment has redundancy with programs and backups to programs.
  • Lead engineer for implementation of process control solutions using automation.
  • Set aggressive project improvement goals, and plan, track and drive the implementation to achieve those goals.
  • Developing process control, communication and process optimization strategies for equipment alongside manufacturing engineers.
  • Work with engineering management and business development on creative solutions in achieving and exceeding process KPIs
  • Conduct commissioning and startup activities along with creation and execution of equipment validation protocols.
  • Deliver the identified value, and meet the agreed upon project milestones.
  • Coordinate with engineering and management team to design automation systems utilizing programs such as SolidWorks.
  • Evaluate, select, and coordinate with outside vendors for the machining and fabrication of tooling and systems, monitoring the progress of automation systems and upgrades for manufacturability and cost reduction.
  • Provide standards and specifications for devices used to build assembly equipment ensuring compliance with all safety standards and customer requirements.
  • Designs, improves and implements production equipment/processes, fixtures/jigs for production equipment and assembly to improve product quality, increase productivity or reduce costs.
  • Provide budgetary costs and ROI for integration of automation/communication in current assembly systems in use Identify, cost justify, implement, and manage new manufacturing systems and equipment to improve plant productivity.
  • Willing to train Manufacturing Engineers and Maintenance Technicians in basics of PLC’s, HMI’s and electrical/electronic trouble shooting.
  • Executes, as appropriate, engineering and quality methods including FEA, Tolerance Analysis, DOE, SPC, FMEA, Process Capability, Root-Cause Analysis, etc.Ability to take a systematic approach to process optimization and problem solving.
  • Effectively owns and manages CAPAs pertaining to their areas of responsibility.
  • Defines, produces and implements documents including process work instructions.
  • Creates, reviews, and approves engineering drawings, equipment layouts, and specifications
  • Performs other duties as necessary.

Position Requirements

 

Knowledge/Education:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Manufacturing/Mechanical/Electrical/Electronics and Communications Engineering/technical field with a focus on processing and medical device assembly desirable.
  • Working knowledge of ISO and applicable customer and regulatory standards.

Job Experience:

  • 3-5 years direct experience
  • Experience and knowledge in operation and maintenance of a classified Clean Room (GMP Procedures, HVAC, Data Acquisition, etc.)
  • Experience in medical device assembly, including strong knowledge of ISO 13485/ISO 14971 standards, SPC, TQM, GMP’s, and lean manufacturing principles is highly desirable.Knowledge of automation and auxiliary equipment including robotics, control systems and material handing (raw material, WIP and Finished Product).

Skills/Competencies:

  • Use of robotics, vision, sensors, PLCs and integration of equipment technologies.
  • Lean manufacturing and new product development or launch support experience is highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Human Machine interfaces (HMI) programming for multiple different brands (Allen Bradley, Direct Logic, Siemens etc.).
  • Strong multiple project management skills to include budgeting and cost justification and control.
  • Statistical knowledge and understanding of metals machining is preferred.
  • Strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Solid Works.

Environmental working conditions

  • While performing the duties of this job, the Associate is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The Associate is occasionally exposed to; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; and vibrations.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
