Fleet Mechanic (Heavy Duty Mechanic)
Department: Department of Transportation – Fleet Management
Full-time, Hourly
Hourly Range: $27.66 - $32.20/hr

Job Summary
The principal function of this position is to repair, set up, dismantling and upkeep of all Milwaukee County owned vehicles and equipment.
Job Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair county owned fleet vehicles and equipment.
- Use floor hoists, diagnostic equipment and other shop equipment as needed.
- Order repair parts as needed to fix vehicles and equipment.
- Complete and file paperwork related to repairs and maintenance per Fleet policy.
- Dismantle and prepare vehicles and equipment for auction.
- Review and interpret service repair manuals and electrical and hydraulic schematics.
- Respond as needed to all snow duty call outs.
- Properly and safely operate vehicle, heavy equipment, mowers, patrol trucks, forklifts, power tools, hand tools, and diagnostic equipment.
- All other duties as assigned.
Required License/Certification, Education and Experience
- Current resident of the state of Wisconsin
- Graduation from High School or G.E.D. equivalent required.
- Valid state of Wisconsin driver’s license at time of hire and maintained throughout employment.
- Ability to secure a Class B CDL with no air brake restriction license within six months of hire date.
- Three (3) years of work experience in late model light and/or heavy vehicles/equipment diagnosis. Able to troubleshoot and repair problems with little to no supervision.
- Ability to lift/carry up to 75 lbs. and push/pull up to 25Ibs.
- Basic knowledge of Diagnostic software and fleet work order system familiarity.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the standard practices, Exchange of basic information with internal and/or external contacts. Read, write and comprehend simple instructions, reports, short correspondence and memos. Read, analyze, and interpret safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions and procedure manuals, scientific/technical journals and procedures, government regulations, financial and legal documents. Makes minimal decision-making responsibility. Understand and follow instructions. Execute decisions within limits of standard policy and procedures.
Note: In accordance with Rule III Section 11 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of a review of candidate materials, education and related experience.
