HVAC Mechanic

DAS – Facilities Management

Hourly Rate: $47.93

 

It is the mission of the Department of Administrative Services to provide high quality and responsive support services. The Department of Administrative Services consists of the major divisions of Performance, Strategy and Budget, Risk Management, Economic Development, Facilities Management (FM), Procurement, Office for Persons with Disabilities (OPD) and Community Business Development Partners (CBDP).

It is the mission of the Facilities Management Division to provide exceptional total lifecycle management for all County facilities and facility-related support functions to enable the County to deliver efficient and effective services to the citizens. 

Job Summary:  Under the direction of the supervisor, the Refrigeration Mechanic will maintain HVAC systems, including all types of heating & cooling equipment, boilers & chillers, rooftop units & built-in systems. Install & maintain HVAC controls such as control panels, room sensors, thermostats.  Works closely with HVAC team members and other Trades and departments.

 

Job Duties:

  • Preventative and Routine Maintenance. To perform chiller, start up and maintenance, chilled water, and cooling tower maintenance; to start up and maintain boilers, controls and steam supply/condensate return; to make daily adjustments on building controls; to monitor and make repairs on HVAC equipment.
  • Emergency Work. To respond to emergency work such as no heat/no cooling, steam leaks, and equipment breakdowns.
  • Requested work. To respond to hot and cold calls.
  • Emergency Work. To respond to emergency work such as no heat/no cooling, steam leaks, and equipment breakdowns.
  • Project Work. To perform project work including adjustments, construction, and capital project participation.
  • Administrative; work order system, ordering materials, asset management.
  • Emergency Response. Provide 24-hour emergency response coverage.
  • To perform all other assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Possession of high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin driver’s license required at time of application and maintained during incumbency.
  • Current refrigeration certification – EPA 608.
  • Steamfitter/Refrigeration or State of Wisconsin registered HVAC Journeyman card at time of hire
  • At least three (3) years of related experience, preferably working as a Journeyman Refrigeration Mechanic
  • Basic Knowledge of computer and software applications such as:  Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

 

Must be able to work in all Milwaukee County facilities including secured detention/high-security facilities and work in areas with sensitive information and assets. Applicants must successfully undergo a criminal history background check to establish security clearance for Milwaukee County facilities and maintain this clearance throughout employment.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of refrigerants and their  appropriate use(s); knowledge of safety regulations and requirements; knowledge of large air handling systems and ability to assist in their repair; knowledge of water treatment systems for cooling tower operation; knowledge of pumps and valves for heating and chilled water systems; skill in adjusting and regulating temperature and air flow; skill in the use(s) of shop tools, leak detectors, electric metering devices, torches, vacuum pump and other tools of the refrigeration mechanic trade; oral and written communication skills; ability to test, adjust and service a variety of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment including chillers; ability to inspect components and auxiliary equipment of refrigeration and air conditioning systems to diagnose problems; mechanical ability; ability to repair, adjust, and service pneumatic controls and DDC control systems; ability to understand and operate computerized building automation system; ability to climb and work in high places and confined areas; ability to comprehend and solve the unique problems regarding computer room cooling systems; ability to schedule and carry out a preventive maintenance program on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment; ability to work without direct supervision and harmoniously with others.
