Senior Laboratory Technician - Wet Chem

Section 1 – Position Summary

 

Assumes responsibilities of competently performing routine water lab analyses as assigned with degree of proficiency.  Will be required to learn additional testing procedures and will be assigned additional tasks as needs arise.   Will be responsible for assisting with the workload of others to ensure that analyses are being performed in a timely manner.

 

Section 2 – Major Responsibilities

 

  1. Performs routine chemical and/or biological analyses on water, wastewater, and related samples as assigned, which include:  pH, total and ortho phosphates, total hardness, total alkalinities, chlorine residuals, turbidities, coliform analysis, biochemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids and other related water / wastewater lab analyses.
  2. Prepares and maintains an adequate stock of chemical solutions and standards.
  3. Operates lab specific software, and prepares forms / benchsheet for daily operations.
  4. Performs first line of data review to insure accuracy of data and associated information.
  5. Maintains equipment in laboratory to ensure the accuracy of measurements and the proper cleanliness and functional operation of that piece of equipment.
  6. Adheres to guidelines set out by methods, SOP’s, OM’s, and general lab practice policies.
  7. Keeps work area clean and free of clutter. 
  8. Assists other laboratory personnel with their workload as needed to ensure analysis is completed in a timely manner.  Assist in a manner that is most advantageous and efficient in performance of given tasks.
  9. Observes safe work practices through the use of proper safety precautions and procedures.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned

 

Section 3 – Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

 

  1. Must be capable of understanding analytical procedures and duties to be performed.
  2. Must develop degree of competence with analyses being performed, giving careful attention to details.
  3. Must be able to operate and maintain equipment to be used.
  4. Must have sufficient mathematical ability.
  5. Must be able to use a computer.
  6. Weekend and holiday work required.

 

Section 4 – Education and Experience

 

  1. Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology or related field.  Four years of laboratory experience may be substituted for degree.
  2. Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  3. Requires a valid Texas Driver’s License.

 

Section 5 – Environmental Factors, Activity Levels and Equipment

 

Moderate physical labor and considerable mental attention required with some eyestrain.  Generally desirable conditions.  Potential hazards include carcinogens, pathogenic organisms, and highly flammable solvents.  Equipment used includes the following: pH/Specific ion Meter, Dissolved Oxygen and Specific Conductance Meters, Ultra Violet-Visible Spectrophotometers, Analytical Balances, Incubators, Hot Plates, Ovens, Autoclaves, Sterilizers, Microscopes, Computer for report generation, and other basic laboratory equipment and glassware, Total Organic Carbon Analyzer.
