General Function:

Under the supervision of the Program Director or designated supervisor, and in harmony with the mission and purpose of the established policies and goals of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas, the Gymnastics Instructor is responsible for the daily operations and instruction the Gymnastic program.   

Qualifications:  

  • Must be at least 18 years of age. 
  • Must have at least 3 years experience teaching dance, a minimum of two years to children, and one year teaching teens and/or adults. 
  • Must hold current recognized Gymnastic Instructor Certification. 
  • Experience working with children in a supervised setting preferred. 
  • Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 required within 60 days of hire. 
  • Complete and maintain required trainings to include: New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Sexual Harassment.  
  • Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and Child Protective Services check. 
Essential Functions:

  • Support the mission, vision and goals of the YMCA. 
  • Promote a professional work environment through character development by modeling the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. 
  • Lead in a manner that advances our cause to strengthen the foundations of community through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
  • Set up, prepare and develop lesson plans and activity schedules for the assigned program area in accordance with the goals and policies of the YMCA. 
  • Teach gymnastic techniques in the classroom. 
  • Ensure that all possible safety measures are observed. 
  • Provide excellent customer service, including interacting with parents and/or participants to answer questions and resolve problems. 
  • Ensure a high level of excellence through surveys and evaluations of the program. 
  • Maintain equipment, develop supply lists, ensure proper use of YMCA facilities and equipment. 
  • Wear staff uniform and name tag, or professional attire when appropriate. 
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled. 
  • Follow department Platinum standards.  
  • Act as a leader in emergency situations. Report any accidents or incidents according to Emergency Communication Action Plan
  • Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements. 
  • Promote and participate in YMCA fundraising efforts to include Annual Support and United Way Campaigns. 
  • Ensure all members, guests, and program participants are in a safe environment and actively follow branch Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).  
  • Carry out other related duties as deemed necessary by the Youth and Family Services Department and branch operations to ensure an excellent member experience.

Skills and Ability Requirements: 


  • Ability to observe children’s behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques. 
  • Ability to communicate and work with assigned ages and skill levels and provide necessary instruction to participants.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to assigned activities. 
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to emergencies and those situations requiring first aid. 
  • Physical strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of children. 
  • Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
