JOB SUMMARY

The Maintenance Technician contributes to the Port’s operations by primarily performing routine and/or repetitive maintenance tasks related to building maintenance, general maintenance, repair, electrical systems, landscape, roadways, marine structures, remodeling and construction duties. This position must be able to operate all types of tools and equipment assigned to the position, work under supervision, and perform a variety of skilled maintenance duties. This position’s focus will be in the Grounds division.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Troubleshoot problems, collaborate with others, and recommend solutions to reach a successful outcome.
  2. Maintain accurate and complete records, including work order completion.
  3. Complete required reports to maintain preventative maintenance schedules.
  4. May train or direct lower-level employees as assigned.
  5. Properly operate basic shop tools and equipment.
  6. Use computerized work order system.
  7. Understand and follow WISHA and L&I work place safety rules.
  8. Monitor/train seasonal staff on basic day-to-day operations such as weeding, watering, mowing, raking, and trash removal.
  9. Assists senior staff in all trades as needed.
  10. Responds to after-hours call outs as requested as appropriate for the level, such as snow removal or to assist senior staff.
  11. May perform duties in one or more of the following areas: electrical, facilities, mechanics, and/or grounds.
  1. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Grounds:

  1. Operates a variety of riding mowing equipment to mow turf areas and a variety of power hand equipment such as hand mowers, weed eaters, edgers, and blowers.
  2. Operates automotive equipment such as pickup trucks with trailer attachments and small utility tractors.
  3. Prunes or removes trees and shrubs using pruners, loppers, bow saws, and power chain saws. Operates motor driven chipper equipment.
  4. Performs turf repairs, renovations, and installations. Plants, fertilizes, and irrigates turf, trees, and shrubs.
  5. Maintains shrub bed areas including edging, hand weeding, and application of mulch as well as planting. Maintains ornamental and flower displays.
  6. Rakes leaves and debris, operates power driven blowers, vacuums, and high-pressure washers.
  7. Upon receipt of Washington State Pesticide Operators License, may apply herbicides as part of grounds care duties.
  8. Complete required reports for tree work and pesticide/fertilizer applications.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Required (Entry level):

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of one year of practical construction/maintenance experience OR relevant certification from a Technical or Vocational college program.

Preferred (Entry level):

  • 1-2 years of vocational education in related trades
  • A Washington State CDL endorsement or ability to secure and maintain. 

 

LICENSES REQUIRED (Entry level):

  • Valid Washington State driver’s license is required.
  • Ability to secure and maintain valid First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Must be able to obtain SIDA (Security Identification Display Area) and TWIC (Transportation Work Identification Credential) clearances.

Position is responsible for specified tasks within the department and does not supervise the work of other employees. Position may be responsible for representing the Port to the public on a regular basis.
