Role overview

Dwell’s Visuals Director is responsible for leading Dwell’s award-winning photo and video program. They are responsible for all aspects of photo shoot production across print and digital platforms, including video program. Candidates should have excellent editorial judgment and a strong ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines at once. A broad knowledge of industry teams and talent connections are a must, i.e. experienced relationships with photographers, video producers, video editors, etc. The Visual Director will propel forward a unique photo legacy rooted in Dwell’s Fruit Bowl Manifesto, with an astounding roster of the industry's top creative talent, and they will continue to champion a new generation of diverse and emerging photographers.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Creative Director to uphold and advance the visual identity of the brand.

  • Help guide Dwell’s creative vision for the photo and video program, which includes home tours, portraiture, object-based journalism, and short-form video and motion for social, –carrying forward Dwell’s legacy of genre-changing photography.

  • Help set the creative strategy for best allocation of resources 

  • Lead all aspects of custom photo and video shoot production, such as commissioning photographers, communicating with the editorial and creative team, and liaising with vendors and subjects to ensure a successful shoot and implementation across all Dwell platforms.

  • Ensure shoot schedules on a rolling basis and communicate deadlines in Dwell’s workflow tools with transparency.

  • Commission new and diverse talent while maintaining existing contributor relationships.

  • Oversee budgets, manage contracts, and maintain usage rights for all visual production. 

  • Initiate assignments, complete briefs and call sheets, and approve invoices.

  • Manage day to day production workflow, including assignments, photo team workload, and quality of creative for print and digital (based on editorial intent).

  • Coordinating photo selections, manage the post-production process, and delivery of assets.

  • Oversee photo research and image selection for print and digital stories.

  • Conduct visual research, create mood boards, and pitch ideas

  • Manage and mentor junior members of the photo and video team.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of work experience in media or relevant fields

  • 5+ years of experience producing and art directing photo/video shoots

  • A genuine interest in interiors, architecture and design is a significant plus

  • Highly organized, excellent communication skills

  • A meticulous eye for detail

  • Ability to contribute to editorial decisions and develop visual stories

  • A strong network of photographers, video editors, and photo agents.

  • The ability to produce content under heavy deadline pressure.

  • Handling a dynamic environment, managing multiple projects calmly, and effectively.
