Position Summary

*This hire will occur at either the Assistant or Associate Director level, dependent upon the incoming level of previous experience and demonstrated relevant expertise. Application review will begin on August 1st.

The Assistant / Associate Director of Teaching Development at the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) will develop, implement, coordinate, and manage centralized teaching development opportunities to promote excellence and equity in teaching and learning at SHU. These teaching development services for SHU instructors currently include instructional consultations, teaching observations, learning communities, faculty peer coaching, workshops, events, internal grants, digital teaching resources, and CTL Tech Studios. The Assistant / Associate Director will also be instrumental in the assessment of the impact and effectiveness of CTL teaching development support and its continuous improvement over time. 

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the CTL Executive Director, develop, implement, coordinate, and manage varied teaching development initiatives that promote and model evidence-based teaching practices. 
  • Uphold the CTL mission, vision, and values throughout all university and external work, including deep commitments to effective and equitable teaching practices. 
  • Support center evaluation efforts to assess CTL services' reach, effectiveness, and impact and identify and act upon opportunities for continuous improvement over time.

Teaching Development

  • Offer instructional consultations and teaching observations, centered in non-evaluative, formative practice. 
  • Design and facilitate learning communities and workshops for SHU faculty, staff, and graduate students interested in teaching that focus on effective and equitable teaching practices.
  • Serve as a CTL Faculty Peer Coaching leadership team member with current faculty program leaders, acting as CTL point person for event management, financial administration, and strategic program development.
  • Coordinate CTL teaching grants (e.g., the EMERGE grant) that foster instructional excellence and innovation through collaboration with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.
  • Further develop the CTL instructor resource site, which provides teaching guidance about CTL services.
  • Stay informed of developments in the educational development field through participation in external professional organizations and conferences, such as the Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Network in Higher Education.
  • Opportunity to teach up to one undergraduate or graduate course at SHU per year, in alignment with disciplinary expertise, interest, and center and institutional needs.  

University Collaboration

  • Uphold the university’s mission and commitment to inclusive excellence throughout all university and external work.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Student Accessibility to promote evidence-based practices in accessibility and instructor development.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Inclusive Excellence to promote teaching practices that center on equity and inclusion.
  • Collaborate closely with the Office of Instructional Technology and instructors to ensure effective use of academic technology, including our learning management system, Blackboard Ultra.

CTL Collaboration & Management

  • Collaboratively manage CTL teaching supports data infrastructure and contribute to data analysis for CTL impact reports.
  • Help manage the planning of CTL teaching events in collaboration with SHU administrative support staff.
  • Collaborate with CTL learning supports team to mutually inform CTL programmatic development.
  • Support the management of the CTL Tech Studios (a lightboard studio and podcast studio) in collaboration with SHU Information Technology, as interest, expertise, and department need allows.
  • Potential to supervise undergraduate student workers, graduate assistants, and/or staff according to departmental needs and demands over time.
  • As needed, assume designated responsibilities of the executive director in their absence, ensuring continuity of operations and decision-making processes.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, & Other Attributes

  • Master’s degree in an academic discipline required; PhD or other advanced degree preferred.
  • Two years of experience in educational development, faculty development, or a related role involving leading professional development opportunities related to teaching for higher education instructors. 
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the higher education level.
  • Deep commitment to and experience with equitable and inclusive teaching practices.
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: online education, artificial intelligence, DEIB (diversity, equity, inclusion & belonging), social justice, scholarship of teaching and learning, and science of learning.
  • Experience using learning management systems, with Blackboard experience preferred.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and collaboration skills, with experience working effectively in teams and welcoming others into communities.
  • Excellent project management skills, with demonstrated ability to take initiative.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong willingness to continue to grow and learn as a professional.
  • Ability to work in person at Sacred Heart University. Occasional remote work may be possible as aligned with department needs.

Unusual Working Conditions

This position may require occasional evening and weekend hours.
