JOB OVERVIEW

 

The Automation Engineer Level 1.5 provides operations with technical support to meet all safety, production, and yield requirements.  Will develop and improve control systems and expand the knowledge base in the Rolling Mill and Finishing areas.  Provide technical experience on project assignments. Serve as project manager on automation related projects and improvements.

 

JOB LOCATION

 

This position is 100% on site at our mill located a few minutes north of Mobile, Alabama.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITES

 

  • Develop modifications, enhancements, and upgrades to the L-1 PLC systems
  • Assist in troubleshooting L-1 HMI problems
  • Manage problems and solutions ranging from the L-0 through Level-2 systems
  • Help manage the long-term planning and growth of the L-1 & L-2 systems
  • Monitor and develop KPIs to track current state of equipment and processes to help mitigate downtown and quality issues
  • Perform Root Cause Failure Analysis on production and quality issues and develop corrective actions
  • Assist in cost justifications for software and hardware enhancements
  • Responsible for the preventive maintenance of automation equipment
  • Assist in the improvement/selection of field devices
  • Assist in the development and training of automation employees
  • Assist in coaching and training in support of a zero-injury safety culture

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Required:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering and 5 years of experience in a process control/automation environment or A.S. in a relevant technical discipline and 10 years of experience in a process control/automation environment
  • Excellent knowledge of L-0 field devices including pressure transducers, flow meters, and linear position transducers
  • Excellent knowledge of level-1 PLC Control such as AB SLC-500, PLC-5/5000, Control Logix, PME (GE/Emerson), and Reflective Memory
  • Knowledge of electrical power layouts, MCC’s, switchgear, and isolation transformers
  • Basic knowledge of L-2 systems or theory of control
  • Capacity to troubleshoot interrelated Level-1 systems and field devices using multimeter, loop generator, meggar, or oscilloscope
  • Experience or working knowledge of hydraulic systems, electrical schematics and drawings, ladder logic or function block, structured text, C, C++, C#, IBA or Dataq systems
  • Experience managing projects
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Self-motivated and goal-oriented with a continuous improvement mindset
  • Good communication (verbal and written,) interpersonal, and teamwork skills
  • Strong commitment to safety

 

 

Preferred:

  • VME based function block knowledge
  • Steckel Mill or Rolling Mill knowledge
  • Knowledge of AC & DC drives
  • Knowledge of AC, DC, and synchronous motors
  • X-ray measuring devices
  • Network experience (Ethernet, Profinet, ControlNet, VME Reflective Memory)
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams
