Job purpose:

SSAB is currently looking to fill Maintenance Apprentice positions.  Apprentices will work closely with the Maintenance Operators performing a variety of electrical and mechanical equipment maintenance, repair and installation throughout the plant. SSAB Iowa has two Maintenance Apprenticeship programs; both programs use the competency-based model and can be completed within three years or less.  Qualified candidates will be enrolled in one of two AAS degree programs offered through Eastern Iowa Community College; Engineering Technology or Technical Studies in order to receive both classroom and on-the-job training. The Maintenance Apprentice has the opportunity for career advancement through company paid training online, in the classroom, and on the job. 

 

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Complete on the job training program and required college courses in order to learn to perform maintenance skills including, but not limited to, mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, troubleshooting and repair of production equipment
  • Train with current employees to perform regular preventive maintenance and breakdown maintenance on production equipment
  • Learn to follow diagrams, sketches, operations manuals and manufacturer’s instructions
  • Diagnose problems, replace or repair parts, test and make adjustments
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools to perform work duties
  • Ensure the machines and tools are in good working order, perform daily cleaning and light maintenance on machinery/tools
  • Responsible for achieving safety, quality and maintenance goals in a manufacturing environment

 

Qualifications: Education and Experience:

Required Education:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent

Required Experience:

  • Knowledge of general manufacturing
  • Ability to complete and adhere to all company safety programs
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal communications skills, written and verbal
  • Demonstrate strong work ethic and displays a high degree of professionalism
  • Display strong attention to detail
  • Must be able to work at a fast pace
  • Ability to work and take college courses in a classroom setting or online
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Regular and reliable attendance

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience operating machinery (crane, forklift, etc)

 

Working conditions:

The employee will frequently be required to:

  • Sit, walk, stand, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
  • Reach above shoulder level and below waist level
  • Use both hands for grasping, fingering, gripping and feeling textures and temperatures
  • Lift and/or move up to 10 pounds
  • Perform repetitive tasks for extended periods

The employee will occasionally be required to:

  • Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

The position requires the following vision and hearing capabilities:

  • Close, distance and peripheral vision
  • Depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
  • Hearing in person, on the phone, and/or in group settings

The employee will work in the following conditions:

  • Extreme hot and cold conditions
  • Wet and humid conditions
  • Amid fumes, dust, dirt, and smoke
  • In confined areas, heights/high places and around equipment in motion
  • Near moving parts of heavy machinery and high voltage equipment
  • Amid noise
  • While wearing personal protective / safety equipment to prevent injury from noise and environmental hazards

 

Position Type – Work Hours – Travel Requirements:

  • Position is a full time, hourly, and is eligible for overtime
  • Position works rotating 12-hour swing shifts to include days and nights
