Camp Lead Lifeguard

Job Summary

The Lead Lifeguard will be responsible for maintaining the safety and cleanliness of the Lakefront. The Incumbent will provide training and general oversight over the other lifeguards on duty.  

 
 

 

Creates a positive experience for camp participants through professional and courteous behavior.

 

Provides life-guarding services.  Responds to emergencies and, if necessary, administer CPR/First Aid;

 

Prepares and submits accident/incident reports.

 

Monitors lifeguard performance and implements training strategies.

 

Provides excellent internal and external customer service.

 

Participates in in-service training, orientations, and other staff meetings as requested.

 

Performs general housekeeping duties in and around the natatorium, i.e., hosing, vacuuming, picking up litter, etc.

 

Practices safe work habits and contributes to the safety of self, co-workers, and the public.

 

Completes relevant reports and records.

 

Assists, as needed, with the operation and maintenance of the pool and equipment; conducts daily walk-throughs to ensure appropriate appearance; documents required repairs and maintenance; maintains accurate inventory of first-aid, chemical, operating, and program supplies; coordinates the purchase of necessary equipment and supplies.

 

Works effectively as a team player.

 

Assists in duties as assigned in accident prevention, crowd control, and emergency procedures.

 

Assists in scheduling of Lifeguards.

 

Ability to lead and direct In-Service Training

 

Assumes a schedule of flexible working hours, including weekends and evenings.

 

Maintains a neat, professional appearance.;

 

Interacts professionally in all contact with camp participants, parents, the public, and Salvation Army Officers and Staff.

Maintains a professional attitude and approach to problem-solving.

 

Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities 

Knowledge of current best practices regarding the aquatics programs and keeping current with new changes that will affect programs.

 

Knowledge of health and safety regulations as defined by the Health Department and The Salvation Army.

 

Ability to swim and extensive knowledge of swim programs.

 

Ability to deal comfortably with stressful situations and follow emergency procedures.

 

Ability to multi-task, follow instructions, and complete tasks safely and effectively.  Must be able to adhere to safe aquatic practices.

 

Ability to effectively build teams.

 

Ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement.  Must be able to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances.

 

Ability to develop and administer facility budgets.

 

Ability to effectively provide leadership, counseling, and education to youth, parents, and staff.

 

Ability and aptitude to make decisions and meet commitments within established policies and procedures and handle sensitive situations appropriately with staff, children, and parents.

 

Ability to supervise staff and participants with varying educational and cultural backgrounds.

 

Ability to read, write and communicate the English language.

 

Ability to use/operate janitorial supplies, hoses, computer/fax/copy machines, marine safety equipment, and other pool equipment such as lane lines and pool lifts.

 

Ability to use Windows & Microsoft Office, which includes Microsoft Word and Excel.

Education and Experience

 

Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.

 

Some Colleges or working towards a four-year degree.

 

And

 

Two to Three (2-3) years of lifeguarding experience.

 

Or

 

Any equivalent combination of training and experience provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Certifications

Certification in Lifeguard Training. 

 

A certificate in Lifeguard Training Instructor is strongly desired.

 

Certification accepted from American Red Cross or Ellis & Associates.

 

Certification in Waterpark Lifeguarding or equivalent (Preferred)

 

Safe From Harm Certification, as directed by supervisor.

 

Swim lesson instruction is complete or completed within 90 days of hire.

 

Water exercise instruction is strongly preferred.

 

Completed and pass the Lead Lifeguard Training.

 

Safe From Harm Certification, as directed by supervisor.

 

NSPF Certified Pool Operator (CPO) (Preferred)
 

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions.

Ability to meet attendance requirements.

 

Must be able to perform tasks of a repetitive nature without diminished performance.

 

Ability to read, write and communicate the English Language.

 

Work requires the ability to lift and carry and/or push/pull moderately heavy (25-50 Ibs.) materials, supplies, and equipment. Moderate mobility duties are usually performed by a combination of sitting, standing, and walking on a frequent change basis.
