The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has an opening for a Director of Development for the Southern Territory Headquarters, located in Memphis, Tennessee.

 

Job Summary

Administers, leads, and supervises the Development Department and monitors an aggressive Direct Fund Raising Program under the direction of an Area Commander; develops and secures funds to reach/surpass fund-raising goals through a variety of financial development vehicles including 1) individual gifts and individual donor upgrading, 2) corporate gifts and sponsorships, 3) foundation support for specific programs and projects, 4) government grants, and 5) capital campaigns, and 6) special events; plans and administers an annual development budget; performs public speaking to promote awareness and financial support for Salvation Army programs.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices of non-profit community relations and development functions.

 

Knowledge of the principles and practices of grant research, applications, and administration.

 

Knowledge of donor cultivation methods and techniques.

 

Knowledge of the principles and practices of budgeting and financial planning.

 

Knowledge of the effective principles and practices of donor database management.

 

Knowledge of fundraising and special event planning, techniques, and practices.

 

Ability to lead, supervise, and evaluate the work for which responsible.

 

Ability to research funding sources and to be creative in overcoming funding barriers.

 

Ability to read and interpret legal documents and contracts.

 

Ability to administer grants/contracts in compliance with legal guidelines and restrictions.

 

Ability to prepare and interpret technical reports and contracts/agreements.

 

Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.

 

Ability to work independently and with limited supervision.

 

Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships in the community and specifically with contacts at funding agencies.

 

Ability to prepare and maintain grant/contract files and records in a neat and organized manner.

 

Ability to plan and coordinate special event arrangements in order to ensure that all functions run smoothly.

 

 

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Advertising, Public Relations, Business Administration, or other related field,

 

Five years-experience performing development and fund-raising activities,

 

or

 

Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Ability to meet attendance requirements.

 

Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.

 

Ability to work under the pressure of deadlines and time constraints.

 

Ability to perform all duties with an understanding of the mission, ministry, philosophy, culture, and protocol of The Salvation Army and conducts all duties in accordance with the ministry of the organization and its Christian principles; conducts all communications and job duties with the highest level of professionalism.

 

Duties are usually performed seated.  Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking.

 

Work may be performed in an office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like but not limited to the office environment.
