Position Type:    Regular, Full-Time

Pay Range:        $22.00 - $27.00

About this opportunity:

Directs and manages the overall daily operations of the health & fitness unit under the control of the organization, specifically, researches, designs, and implements health, nutrition and physical education programming; primary concern for a comprehensive, outcome-driven program and service delivery, supervision and training of staff (direct and indirect reports), personnel issues, management of a facility, manage a budget, actively engage and support a Unit Advisory Council, community relations, volunteers, and membership administration. Represents the Club in the community and builds a professional and positive image of The Salvation Army implementing program services that advance the mission of The Salvation Army.

The Branch Manager of Health & Fitness plans, develops, and oversees the activities of fitness programs for all demographics; supervises fitness program staff; ensures that the mission of The Salvation Army is a top priority in all areas and activities.  Promotes healthy behaviors and choices.  Incorporates national physical education standards to create age-appropriate lesson plans.  Organizes team sports.  Manages the use of the aquatic center, fitness studio and gymnasium and related supplies and equipment.  Responsible for safe operation of the same.

Key responsibilities:

  • Plans, coordinates, and directs all health and fitness programs for the Boys & Girls Club; plans, directs, recruits, schedules and supervises all program staff and volunteers; trains and instructs employees in the proper methods and procedures; conducts performance evaluations, provides salary, and hiring/firing recommendations.
  • Conducts regular safety inspections; Oversees the maintenance of a clean facility in collaboration with the facilities staff; Communicates with vendors and technical support as needed to ensure equipment is in working order. 
  • Oversees the health and fitness staff in the planning and coordination of activities and programs. Develops after-school and summer learning objectives, curricula, lesson plans and instructional calendars for health, fitness, nutrition, wellness, and sports programming leads; evaluates the effectiveness of each program and initiates and oversees any needed changes.
  • Ensures the delivery of outcome driven programs that align with the developmental needs of all young people.

What we are looking for in you:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university Recreation Administration, Physical Education, Exercise Science, Sport Management, or any closely related discipline AND
  • Three years minimum experience in a position requiring similar responsibilities; OR
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • National group exercise certification by ACE, ACSM, AFAA or equivalent. (Preferred)
  • CPR/First Aid Certification 
  • Valid State Drivers’ License without restrictions; CDL a plus. 
  • Tier 1 BGCA Certified Trainer (or ability to obtain) 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Ability to participate in active sports and recreation activities. Ability to lift and handle physical equipment set-ups for various activities, up to 50 pounds. Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write and communicate in the English language. Ability to think, concentrate and learn. Ability to be compassionate, enthusiastic, and empathetic. Ability to exercise maturity, self-control, sound judgement, sense of humor and patience. Able to work in a fast-paced environment and be flexible. Ability to work in occasionally stressful situations. Job requires sitting, stooping, standing, jumping, walking, running, bending and moderate lifting. Ability to work some evening and weekend hours. Indoor work is performed in an office/classroom environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with dust, dirt. Outdoor work is performed in generally hospitable conditions but exposed to variable atmospheric and climate conditions.
