About This Role:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Preclinical Veterinary Research Manager!  This role provides leadership and strategic business support to veterinary research staff.  This individual will oversee, manage, coordinate, and prioritize the management of Veterinary Research in daily animal care, pre-operative care, intra-operative care, post-operative care, and regulatory compliance.

What You Will Do:

  • Provides management and leadership to animal care staff, including coordinating program allocations and priorities, training, performance management, professional development, and educational development. Organizes animal care staff to accomplish goals efficiently and accurately.
  • Contributes to business development activities as a subject matter expert (SME) by generating strategy and proposal documents, data analysis, report writing, research protocol writing, and standard operating procedure (SOP) development.
  • Ensures standard operating procedures (SOPs), study protocols and documentation, and all biosafety and animal welfare regulations are followed and accurately documented in a timely manner.
  • Ensures the proper storage and management of controlled and dangerous drugs.
  • Monitors and ensures adequate housing for research animals.
  • Assesses animal welfare, related training activities and provides guidance, modifications and enhancements to assure regulatory compliance and adherence to ethical standards. 
  • Leads and mentors animal care staff while providing employee development and teambuilding. 
  • Achieves staff results by communicating job expectations; planning monitoring and appraising job results; coaching and counseling employees; developing, coordinating, and enforcing systems, policies, procedures, SOP’s and productivity standards.
  • Leads internal continuous improvement initiatives to deliver on measurable outcomes within the animal care discipline.
  • Leads emergency care of research animals, disaster recovery efforts and emergency response notification for employees and facilities.
  • Supports pre-clinical research business, personnel, supplies, and equipment as needed to maintain licenses, certifications, validations, and accreditations. 
  • Supports and advises on research logistics, planning, training, and the execution of research animal protocols.
  • Maintains research animal supply needs, examples include but not limited to: Feed, water, sanitation supplies, enrichment, medications, and caging supplies.

Qualifications

Required Skills:

  • Doctoral degree in veterinary medicine plus 2-5 years of relevant work experience
  • 1-2 years of experience in a leadership capacity
  • Good knowledge of preclinical research related legislation, principles, practices, and procedures
  • Good knowledge of good laboratory practice (GLP)
  • Knowledge of overall medical device industry
  • Good knowledge of company people management policies and procedures, including hiring, performance management, corrective action, and compensation administration
  • Good people management and mentoring skills including coaching, interviewing, and providing feedback and recognition
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and projects
  • Ability to communicate complex business concepts to a multi-disciplinary audience
  • Ability to manage team resources to ensure attainment of departmental objectives

Preferred:

  • Expertise in research animal enrichment programs
  • Expertise in research animal models, anesthesia, and surgery
  • Expertise in pre-clinical regulations, USDA, OLAW, FDA, AAALAC Accreditation

This role is required to be in the lab (onsite) full-time.
