Volunteers of America-Greater New York (VOA-Greater New York) is an anti-poverty organization working to end homelessness in the New York area by 2050. We operate over 60 programs across New York City, Northern New Jersey and Westchester County including emergency, transitional and permanent housing. Our services extend to families experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic violence, people living with HIV/AIDS, veterans, youth aging out of foster care, adults with behavioral health or substance use needs, and others in need, including a special education preschool program.

Position: Program Director

 

We seek a dedicated and visionary Program Director to lead our construction and employment program tailored to young adults. This role is instrumental in designing, implementing, and overseeing a comprehensive program to equip young adults with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities needed to succeed in their job goals. The ideal candidate will possess a passion for youth development, a strong background in workforce development and performance-based programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and five years relevant in program management, preferably in youth and workforce development.

  • Must demonstrate leadership abilities, with experience managing staff, volunteers, and diverse groups of participants.
  • Excellent communications skills, with the ability to engage and motivate young adults, build partnerships, and advocate for program goals.
  • Proven track record of project planning, implementation, and evaluation, emphasizing result-oriented approaches.
  • Ability to independently prioritize tasks and adapt to changing circumstances in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of the construction industry, building codes, safety regulations, and industry trends is preferred.
  • Flexibility to work some early evening hours to accommodate client needs required.

 

Program Director Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Program Development and Management:
  • Develop a strategic plan for the YouthBuild program, outlining objectives, goals, and milestones.
  • Review curriculum and training materials to ensure that they provide participants with relevant construction skills, safety training, and employability skills.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure alignment of program objectives with industry needs and employment opportunities.
  1. Program Implementation and Management:
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the program, including scheduling, resource allocations, and participant recruitment.
  • Coordinate training sessions, workshops, and on-the-job learning experiences to enhance participants’ skill development and employability.
  • Monitor program progress, evaluate effectiveness, and make necessary adjustments to ensure program success.
  1. Manage Program Personnel
  • Recruitment and selection of suitable candidates for vacant positions
  • Facilitate the onboarding and training of new employees to ensure a smooth integration into the organization and provide/connect new employees with the necessary training for their job roles.
  • Create a motivating work environment, recognizing and rewarding achievements and promoting employee engagement and satisfaction.
  • Provide clear and timely communication regarding goals, expectations, and changes and promote transparency within the team
  1. Participant guidance and support:
  • Provide mentorship, personalized coaching and support to program participants, offering guidance on career pathways, goal setting, and personal development by addressing individual needs.
  • Foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment to promote teamwork, accountability, and mutual respect among the participants.
  1. Partnership Development and Outreach:
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with local employers, industry organizations, educational institutions, and community agencies to create employment opportunities and secure resources for the program.
  • Collaborate with external partners to develop internships, apprenticeships, and job placement opportunities for program graduates.
  • Represent the program at community events, conferences, and meetings to raise awareness and build support for program initiatives.
  1. Reporting and Evaluation:
  • Prepare regular reports on program activities, participant progress, and outcomes for funders, stakeholders, and organizational leadership.
  • Conduct ongoing evaluation and assessment of program effectiveness, utilizing data and feedback to drive continuous improvement efforts.
  • Ensure compliance with grant requirements, reporting deadlines, and regulatory standards.
