What is the opportunity?   

The Charleston Community Engagement Specialist will support all engagement events and activities throughout the greater Charleston area. These include the Walk for Water in N. Charleston, the Education Initiative, speaking engagements, peer-to-peer fundraising activities, community booths, and tours. This role will provide excellent customer service to corporate partners, schools, churches, volunteers, other organizations, and individuals. He or she will ensure the administrative aspects of community engagement are done in a timely manner in keeping with Water Mission’s values of love, excellence, and integrity. In addition, the Charleston Community Engagement Specialist will have strong communication and organization skills that maintain professionalism and meet goals. This position reports to the Charleston Community Engagement Manager and will be based at Water Mission’s headquarters in Charleston, SC.   

 

A successful Charleston Community Engagement Specialist will: 

 

General Duties 

  • Maintain a strong Christian witness and model servant leadership to colleagues, partners, the communities we serve, and the public.
  • Engage and participate in prayer before and after team meetings. 
  • Lead and participate in biblically based staff devotions. 
  • Maintain a high-level knowledge of Water Mission’s organizational objectives, programmatic strategies, projects, and activities. Stay informed of local, regional, national, and global news and issues to support the organization effectively.
  • Assist with Water Mission events as assigned.  

Charleston Community Engagement

  • Equip and assist volunteer advocates and build partnerships in Charleston. This includes but is not limited to, scheduling engagements, database management, volunteer and partner communications, and mailings.
  • Work with the Sr. Manager, Charleston Community Engagement to implement all Charleston Walk for Water events and activities, ensuring partners and volunteers receive excellent customer service and a best-in-class experience.  
    • Schedule, coordinate, and equip volunteers who support the Walk for Water in N. Charleston.
    • Answer Walk participantsquestions regarding registrations or Walk details.
    • Answer inquiries from potential Walk sponsors and supporters.
    • Coordinate the creation, implementation, and execution of the peer-to-peer fundraising platform (Neon One) for the Walk for Water in N. Charleston.
    • Work with Sr. Manager, Charleston Community Engagement Walk, National Walk team, and Marketing and Communications team to develop and produce all Walk materials for the Charleston Walk program.
    • Schedule, train, and equip advocates to conduct tours. Schedule tours and coordinate tour leaders. Lead or co-lead tours as needed.
    • Research and recommend vendors for the Walk for Water and associated wrap-around events.
  • Schedule, train, and equip advocates to conduct tours. Schedule guests requesting tours. Lead or co-lead tours as needed.
  • Input activities into volunteer tracking software and ensure hours are accurate and up to date.
  • Develop a quarterly training program in coordination with the Volunteer Specialist to equip Advocates and Champions in engaging the Charleston community: Tours, Education Initiative, Community Booths, Presentations, and Growing Relationships.
  • Work closely with the National Volunteer Specialist to equip and lead Charleston-based volunteers.
  • Schedule school engagement activities through the Education Initiative program. This includes reaching out to potential schools to arrange presentations by Education Advocates, scheduling and organizing field trips to Water Mission headquarters, and assisting school teams in their walk preparation and advocacy.
  • Work with Sr. Manager, Charleston Community Engagement, MarCom, and Advocates to update presentations for students involved in the Education Initiative
  • Track peer-to-peer fundraising activities in Charleston and supply fundraising materials.
  • Coordinate Champion Program for high school students, training and equipping youth to represent Water Mission in their schools and community.
  • Work with the Sr. Manager, Charleston Community Engagement to foster and engage churches in the Charleston community.
  • Work collaboratively with other Water Mission departments to ensure deadlines are met. 
  • Ensure partnership activities and communications are accurately recorded in the Charleston Engagement Smartsheet as well as Raiser’s Edge in a timely manner.
  • Utilize Smartsheet ensuring project status is always kept current and accurate.
  • Support additional projects as assigned.

  • Consistently present a professional image and effectively communicate with a variety of audiences about the global water crisis and Water Mission’s vision, mission, values, and solutions. 
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. 
  • One or more years of professional experience in event coordination, logistics, project management, or similar field. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly articulate ideas and feedback constructively. 
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office software: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. 
  • Excellent attention to detail with proven organization skills. 
  • Experience working with Raiser’s Edge, Neon One, and Luminate a plus. 
  • Thrives under pressure and has a proven track record of meeting deadlines. 
  • Ability to work in a highly fluid environment and ability to respond to changing requests. 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse groups of people. 
  • Flexibility to work periodic nights and weekends as required for ministry operations.
  • Ability to lift up to 25lbs and assist with event set up and material storage    
  • Domestic and international travel may be expected up to 10%.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Home internet bandwidth strong enough to support video conferencing and other job-related responsibilities is required
  • Commitment to the values and mission of the organization and ending the global water crisis.
