General Function

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Program Instructor plans and teaches skills and activities for youth/families that are developmentally appropriate and enriching. Develops positive relationships including providing prompt and courteous service to members, participants and guests.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Implements culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate activities within the curriculum in accordance with the youth development goals of the YMCA.
  • Supervises a group of children to ensure their health and safety and to provide for a positive experience for each child.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergency procedures.
  • Professionally engages with parents/guardians to provide pertinent information about their child’s experience and to promote upcoming programs.
  • Ensures that equipment is clean and safe, set up and stored properly. Reports equipment problems to supervisor.
  • Attends staff meetings and training programs as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Education/Experience/Training/Certifications

· High School education or equivalent

· Ability to plan and initiate culturally relevant and age appropriate games and activities

· Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations

· Must demonstrate good communication skills.

· Program lesson planning and instructional skills preferred

  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.

  • Ability to plan, lead and participate in all physical activities

  • Ability to sit and stand from a seated position on the floor when interacting with
    children.

  • Capability to be outside participating for the majority of the day.  

  • Ability to Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical situations and behavior management, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
