Housing Navigator

Join our Housing Program within the Homeless Services Division as a Housing Navigator. In this vital role, you will work directly with individuals experiencing homelessness, guiding them towards stable housing and addressing barriers they face. Your efforts will include providing assessments, referrals, collecting necessary documents, assisting with housing applications, and developing relationships with landlords to increase housing opportunities. You will collaborate with multiple service providers and emergency personnel to enhance and coordinate service delivery.

 

We would love to hear from someone who:

  • Has a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, or a related field, OR
  • Has an Associate’s Degree/Two years of College in social work, human services, psychology, or related fields, plus two (2) years of related work or volunteer experience.
    • Related work/volunteer experience: Direct human or health services to the economically disadvantaged, physically/mentally disabled, substance abuse/dual diagnosed individuals, the elderly, and/or at-risk youth.
    • Or, Four (4) years of related work experience.
  • Has dependable, insured transportation, a valid California Driver's License (mileage reimbursed), and an acceptable driving record.

As a Housing Navigator you will:

  • Develop and implement individual housing plans and assessments for clients to determine appropriate permanent housing interventions.
  • Guide clients to permanent housing placements or programs that provide safe and stable housing based on their eligibility, needs, and choice.
  • Act as a resource by providing referrals to community services and facilitating connections to these resources.
  • Provide one-on-one case management, promoting resilience through techniques such as Motivational Interviewing, Nonviolent De-Escalation, and Crisis Intervention.
  • Prioritize caseload to work with the highest-need participants and provide appropriate housing resources through providers and private landlords.
  • Work with lower acuity clients to ensure they locate housing and bring housing leads to the navigator.
  • Build relationships with local landlords to increase housing opportunities for clients.
  • Ensure a smooth transition when clients are placed into more suitable housing programs.
  • Maintain accurate and complete client files in the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) and other reports as directed.
  • Interact with various service providers and community members.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age by date of hire. 
  • Must comply with the CAPSLO COVID-19 Vaccination Policy, either being fully vaccinated or sign a COVID-19 vaccination declination form.
  • Based on program, a current TB skin test/Chest X-Ray may be required. 
  • Employment is contingent upon meeting all applicable job requirements and background requirements. A criminal history clearance is required prior to employment. 
  • Upon hire, agency staff will check the Megan’s Law (or the current sexual predator website) to ensure each staff being hired is clear for employment. Agency staff will check the website annually to ensure all program staff are cleared to work.
