Special Education Technician

As a Specialist Education Technician, you will support the administrative staff, Center Supervisor, and Teachers in achieving overall program goals and objectives. You will share responsibility for providing a high-quality educational experience for children with disabilities and ensuring they have access to the same learning and play opportunities as all children.

 

We would love to hear from someone who:

  • Has an Associate of Arts degree.
  • Has 6 months of experience working with a child with a disability or related experience.
  • Can pass CAPSLO’s Behavioral Health and Disabilities Aide Training Exam.
  • (Preferred) Has units in Early Childhood Education/Child Development including courses in:
    • Child, family and community or child and family relations; and programs/curriculum for children with disabilities.

 

As a Special Education Technician, you will be responsible for:

  • Child Support: Assist children with special needs, ensuring their safety and participation in all activities. Implement Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSP) and Individualized Education Programs (IEP) with input into lesson plans and participation in small group activities.
  • Supervision and Safety: Pay close attention to the safety of children, maintain firm but gracious limit setting, and be aware of special health concerns.
  • Environmental Maintenance: Maintain a clean, safe environment by participating in housekeeping tasks such as dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, and dishwashing.
  • Therapy Support: Perform special exercises and follow-up activities as described by therapists, aiding in occupational, physical, and/or speech therapy.
  • Self-Help Skills: Assist children in developing self-help skills such as toileting, feeding, dressing, and napping.
  • Documentation: Document children’s progress and any concerns, maintaining confidentiality of child and family information.
  • Team Collaboration: Work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to assess and implement each child’s IFSP and IEP, and participate in case conferencing and staff meetings.
  • Complete pediatric first aid and pediatric CPR training within 30 days of hire. 
  • Be responsible for renewing and maintaining a valid CPR/first aid certification at all times.

Additional eligibility qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age by date of hire. 
  • Must submit proof of current vaccination status for measles, pertussis, and influenza (or a current, signed influenza declination form) in compliance with SB 792.
  • Must comply with the CAPSLO COVID-19 Vaccination Policy, either being fully vaccinated or sign a COVID-19 vaccination declination form.
  • Must complete a health screening physical completed within 30 days prior to employment and a current TB skin test/Chest X-Ray. 
  • Employment is contingent upon meeting all job requirements and background requirements: criminal history check (Inclusive of DOJ, FBI and Child Abuse), acknowledgement of child abuse reporting responsibility, criminal record statement (Form LIC508), etc. A criminal history clearance is required prior to employment. 
  • Upon hire agency staff will check the Megan’s Law (or the current sexual predator website) to ensure each staff being hired is clear for employment. Program administrative staff will check the website annually to ensure all program staff are cleared to work. 
  • Must meet the Head Start Performance Standards and State requirements. 
  • Employment in Head Start, Early Head Start and Migrant and Seasonal Head Start Programs is contingent upon approval of the Policy Council.
