R&D Applications Engineer (Metals) – Greeneville, TN
Reporting directly to the President of the organization, the R&D Applications Engineer is responsible for the conceptualization and innovation of new products including scaling to manufacturing level. This position will oversee and operate a set of sub-scale equipment dedicated to the development of new zinc-based alloys and process development. Equipment includes a melting furnace, a caster, a rolling mill, an optical electronic microscope plus a variety of metallography equipment used to analyze and characterize material properties.
Job Duties / Responsibilities
- Innovation of new materials for zinc alloys and zinc based products, or processes to enable new products in coinage, cathodic protection, and industrial - automotive fuse, building and construction, and architectural products.
- Lead the identification of new properties for zinc based products or processes for 1) alloying and forming zinc, or 2) electroplating of coinage type products.
- Scaling of new products or processes into the manufacturing realm, ensuring the clear hand off of critical parameters and processing required to achieve functional product in a reliable manner.
- Cross functional leadership of New Product Development group members (process engineers, quality, sales, purchasing, program management, etc.) to assist in the facilitation of the above functions.
- Interface with potential customers to better understand their needs and convey our capabilities in a clear manner.
- Assist ancillary groups such as manufacturing, marketing and sales as needed to provide a technical perspective in that area.
- Develop, create, and test new potential zinc alloys in the alloy development lab.
- Collaborate with coinage lab on product and process improvements for zinc and steel based coins.
- Present lab development results internally at Artazn, and periodically to our customers.
- Attend trade shows and conferences to gain increased knowledge of zinc and electroplating, and to develop network of peers.
Education / Experience / Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering in a relevant engineering field (Master’s degree a plus)
- 5+ years’ experience in product development (preferably metals)
- Metallurgical background highly preferred
- Experience working in a heavy manufacturing environment (metals)
- Experience in quality systems
- Strong knowledge of chemistry and chemical safety related to metals and metal manufacturing
