Job purpose:

The role of the Quality Operations Technician is to ensure that all processing cut-to-length products (as well as other products as required) are properly tested in the mechanical test lab and conform to the ordered customer requirements and/or applicable governing specifications in a safe, timely and efficient manner.

This position requires both working in an operational, hands-on capacity as well as working in a maintenance capacity in the assigned Laboratory. In addition, administrative duties will be required.

 

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Ensures that specified procedures for the preparation of samples are being used and does calibration on required equipment on a prescribed schedule. 
  • Sets up and prepares samples per the set standards and procedures using bandsaws, CNC milling equipment and various other equipment.
  • Ensures products are tested according to the priority established by SSAB operations/sales departments by daily confirming shipping orders and prepares the appropriate tests.
  • Performs required testing from test specimens using Tensile Test machine, Charpy V-Notch Test machine and various other testing equipment.
  • Enters lab test results into computer database to create certificates for products to be released and shipped.
  • Identifies product on hold and resolves hold reasons. Maintains proper documentation and file as required.
  • Ensures all products shipped meet customer requirements and/or governing specifications with respect to grade and provides accurate information to appropriate personnel on products which are unreleased.
  • Reviews and makes recommendations to cross apply product by retesting, reviews customer specifications and certifies the cross applied product.
  • Traces and expedites materials that require testing.
  • Ensures routine maintenance and general upkeep of the lab equipment and work area is completed.
  • Performs any required re-testing, or other special testing as assigned.
  • Performs equipment preventive maintenance (clean, grease, coolant replacement, tooling/blade changes, change lubricants, and make necessary adjustments to equipment).
  • Verifies supply levels are adequate to operate all equipment and orders operating supplies as needed through the purchasing system.
  • Completes all production paperwork, perform administrative duties to support laboratory operations, and enter physical testing data results into a computer as needed,
  • Assist sales and operations on product dispositioning and the release of material (including on hold product).

 

Qualifications: Education and Experience:

Required Education:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent

Preferred Education:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree

Required Experience:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents
  • Must possess strong computer skills and have good working knowledge with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).  Experience with other PC based data acquisition tools a Plus.
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Good verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Experience:

  • Three to five years of experience in a manufacturing environment (especially in the temper leveling and cut-to-length field).
  • Good applied technology experience with cutting and milling equipment.
  • Understanding of ISO 9001 and ASTM standards.

 

Working conditions:

The employee will frequently be required to:

  • Sit, stand, walk, alternating up to 8 hours at a time
  • Use both hands for grasping, handling, gripping and feeling textures and temperatures
  • Lift and/or move up to 10 lbs

The employee will occasionally be required to:

  • Balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or climb
  • Bend, twist at waist level, reach at and/or above shoulder level and below waist level
  • Push, pull, lift, and/or carry items weighing less than 50 pounds

The position requires the following vision and hearing capabilities:

  • Vision at near, mid and far range and peripheral vision and depth perception
  • Talking and hearing in person, on a radio, and/or in group settings

The employee will be required to use the following machines or tools:

  • Desktop computer
  • Hand tools
  • Floor mounted jib crane
  • Propane or Electric Forklift
  • HAAS Machining Center
  • Electric Band Saws
  • Misc. Testing Equipment

The employee will work in the following conditions:

  • Around equipment in motion
  • Amid noise
  • While wearing personal protective / safety equipment to prevent injury from noise and environmental hazards
  • Around moving trucks and industrial mobile equipment

 

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

  • No Direct reports

 

Position Type – Work Hours – Travel Requirements:

  • Position is full time, non-exempt
  • This is a 1st Shift position working (5) 8 hour shifts (6 am – 2:30 pm, Mon - Fri). 
  • Candidate must be flexible to work OT to aide in expediting material release when needed.
