General Function

The Aquatics Associate creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA, American Red Cross, and the State of Michigan policies and procedures. The Aquatics Associate is responsible for lifeguarding and swim instruction, as well as for promoting safety in our branches by providing CPR and First Aid training to all staff, as required.

Education/Experience/Training/Certifications

  • Minimum age of 18
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard license is preferred, but not required (we offer certification)
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid, AED, and Emergency Oxygen
  • Two years of experience lifeguarding and teaching swim lessons preferred.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintains actively attended surveillance of the pool area utilizing the “effective 10/20 scanning strategy”, while ensuring fellow staff follows proper guidelines and correct when needed
  • Responds to emergency situations and relays reports in accordance with YMCA and The American Red Cross policies and guidelines
  • Performs and documents proper equipment and chemical checks using appropriate protocol
  • Attends all staff meetings, required training and certification courses, and attends monthly in-service training.
  • Performs other assigned duties as directed by Supervisor

Abilities & Skills

  • Ability to hear and observe distress signals in the water and anywhere in zone of responsibility
  • Skills to meet strength and lifting requirements
