Location: Western Alaska

 

SUMMARY:  Bering Marine Corporation provides charter and scheduled service throughout Alaska with its fleet of tugs and barges, landing crafts, and hovercraft.  The Mate assists the Vessel Captain in commanding the vessel(s) in and out of harbors, estuaries, straits, sounds, and rivers, performs other duties aboard the vessel, and assists during cargo loading and unloading. Stands navigation watch while underway. Bering Marine maintains a Zero Tolerance workforce.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assists the Vessel Captain in determining course and speed based on specialized knowledge of wind, weather, tides, and currents.
  • Steers the vessel and may push or pull barges to the destination and berth while avoiding shipping hazards and utilizing various navigation devices.
  • May assist in the oversight of vessel loading and unloading.
  • Tracks and reports crew days and cargo hours and reports it promptly.
  • Keeps logs of vessel operations as required by the company or USCG.
  • Ensures crew and vessel safety and upholds the Company's safety policies. Assists Captain in conducting safety meetings, JSA’s, and other reporting conditions.
  • Performs other duties as instructed by Vessel Captain.
  • Teamwork is a must.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High School or GED preferred A Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Mate.  Alaska experience preferred.  Local Knowledge of the operating area is required.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, governmental regulations, and safety regulations. Ability to write reports and accurately record information into vessel records.   Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, crew, customers, and the general public. English speaking is required (need to talk on the radio)

 

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.

 

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to use common sense and sound judgment to deal simultaneously with situations and multiple problems in a highly controlled and regulated environment. Ability to interpret various instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:
Minimum Requirements
USCG License- Mate 200 ton minimum, coastal. Towing endorsement preferred.

Radar endorsement

Merchant Marine Document

STCW Endorsement preferred

TWIC Card required

FCC Radio License required

Vessel-specific training may be required

Current CG Physical Card required

Driver’s license preferred.   

Passport preferred

 

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be available to work days, evenings, weekends, nights, or holidays and to be away from home for extended periods. Must be able to work in a team environment in close quarters for extended periods.  Must have good interpersonal skills and get along well with various personalities, backgrounds, etc.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and smell. The employee is frequently required to walk. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Lift and launch life raft, don a survival suit in a reasonable amount of time unassisted.

 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; explosives and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

 

COMMENTS:
Post-conditional offer of employment drug test is required. Random drug testing is required of all employees.
