Position:         SEC Financial Reporting Manager

 

Company:       SMP is a $1.3 billion, global, NYSE manufacturer/distributor of vehicle and temperature control systems for the automotive aftermarket, and engineered solutions for diverse non-aftermarket end markets.

 

Location:         Long Island City, New York

 

Reports To:     Chief Accounting Officer

 

Overview:    The SEC Financial Reporting Manager will be responsible for preparation of the Company’s external financial statements including Form 10-Q, Form 10-K and all other registration filings with the SEC; for the research and implementation of all new accounting standards; for overseeing the conflict minerals reporting process; for assisting in the drafting and updating of policies and procedures within the Company-wide finance and accounting policies and procedures manual; and as a participant in various other special projects.

 

Primary responsibilities of the position would include:

 

  • Preparation of the Company’s filings with the SEC on Form 10-Q, Form 10-K, registration statements and all other required filings, including preparation of “Management’s Discussion and Analysis of Financial Condition and Results of Operations,” and all financial statements, footnotes and required disclosures.

 

  • Monitoring, research and implementation of newly issued statements, pronouncements, and interpretations of Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

 

  • Determination of the proper accounting, in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, for complex and non-recurring transactions including the accounting for plant shutdowns, restructurings and asset impairments, for acquisitions, divestures and discontinued operations, deferred taxes, stock-based compensation transactions, etc.

 

  • Preparation of internal accounting memorandums in support of positions taken related to proper accounting treatment of complex transactions, implementation of new accounting standards, and annual assessments of accounting treatments including goodwill and intangible asset impairment analyses, segments, related party transactions, etc.  Works closely with external auditors in gaining their concurrence with positions taken.

 

  • Assisting in the drafting and updating of policies and procedures within the Company-wide finance and accounting policies and procedures manual, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of accounting controls for the Company.

 

  • Preparation of the Company’s quarterly earnings per share computation; accounting for the Company’s stock-based compensation plans and retirement plans; and the review and analysis of Company-wide reserves and valuation accounts. 

 

  • Execute controls in all areas of responsibility and as a “tester and/or reviewer” in the Company’s internal control compliance effort surrounding Sarbanes-Oxley s404.

 

  • Preparation of various reports and communications to the Audit Committee and Board of Directors, including the review of the Company’s quarterly earnings press releases.

 

  • Oversee the conflict minerals reporting process, including managing the staff, third party software provider, customer reporting, and SEC reporting.

 

  • Participation, as the accounting representative, in various special projects as they arise.  

 

To function as the SEC Financial Reporting Manager the following experience and skills are required:

                           

  • Approximately 5-8 years accounting/finance experience, preferably in both private industry and a “Big 4” accounting firm. “Top Tier” accounting firm experience a must.

 

  • Experience with, and in-depth knowledge of, public company reporting requirements and generally accepted accounting standards.  Knowledge and experience working in an international environment a plus.

 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.  Knowledge of Oracle FCCS (aka HFM) consolidation software and JD Edwards accounting software a plus.

 

  • Capable of working as a team player and comfortable being part of a “hands on” team of professionals.  Strong work ethic a must.

 

  • Ability to exercise proper judgment with above average analytical skills.

 

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

 

  • CPA a must.  MBA would be desirable but not required.

The estimated salary range for this position is $140,300 - $158,500
Please note that the salary range provided on the job posting does not include potential bonuses and other forms of compensation and, in some cases, may fall outside the range. The actual salary offered will be based on a wide range of factors, including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and where applicable, licensure or certification obtained.
